Worldwide sales of dairy milk alternatives more than doubled between 2009 and 2015, and it's likely you've seen a whole range of these in the shops.
Oat milk, almond milk and hemp milk are now fairly common sights on shop shelves. But have you ever thought about homemade hemp milk?
Here's how to make hemp milk by yourself. You don't need to soak or strain the ingredients before you start, so it's a very quick recipe!
How to Make Hemp Milk - Equipment
You'll need some fairly basic equipment to make hemp milk, none of which is very hard to find.
A good, powerful blender with very sharp blades is essential. You'll also need a large bowl, and a nut milk bag. Alternatively, instead of a milk bag, you can use a cheesecloth or a similar fine netted cloth - and use this to line a funnel.
Finally, you'll need some clean bottles for milk you're going to make.
It's a good idea to sterilize the bottles before starting using boiling water - leave them to drip dry in a clean area rather than toweling them off.
How to Make Hemp Milk - Ingredients
- 1 cup of hemp hearts or 1 cup of hulled hemp seeds
- 3 to 4 cups of filtered water, depending on your preferences
- A small pinch of good quality salt
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- 2 tbsp maple syrup (optional)
- 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
All of the optional ingredients are used to add sweet flavors to your milk, and it's up to you whether to include these or not. You might want to try alternatives such as stoned dates or even half a banana.
If you want, you can also make strawberry hemp milk or chocolate hemp milk using fresh strawberries or cacao powder - add to taste.
How to Make Hemp Milk - Method
Put your hemp seeds or hearts into the blender, along with the water and salt. Set your blender to maximum speed and blend until the hemp is smashed apart and well mixed into the water.
You can drink it after the first step, but for smoother milk you must strain it.
Simply pour it through your milk bag and into the large bowl. Then bottle it using a ladle and your funnel.
If you don't have a milk bag, take your funnel and line it with cheesecloth (or a suitable alternative). Pour the milk in batches through the funnel and into a large bowl. Then bottle it up as above.
Chill your milk in the fridge and drink or use as necessary.
