Baking Bread With Hemp Seed Flour
Baking your own bread is a great way of ensuring that you get a healthy loaf, without additives and colorings. Not only will you have bread for the perfect sandwich, but your house will smell amazing. Baking with hemp seed flour is great, because it is rich in nutrients and can make your loaf taste delicious. It is a true alternative to white all-purpose flour, and better for you.
The benefits of Hemp Seed Flour
Hemp seed flour is a good source of protein and also has essential fatty acids that are essential for muscle repair. It also contains Vitamin E, which the body needs to maintain healthy eyes and skin, and helps the body fight infections and illness. Hemps seeds are a good source of minerals including sodium, potassium, iron and zinc. Because the process to make hemp seed flour is very minimal, the nutritional benefits of these vitamins and minerals aren’t lost, unlike white flour, which has almost zero nutritional flour. Plus the flour makes bread taste delicious - it has a natural, nutty flavor that lends itself well to being mixed with other seeds, such as chia and linseed. It is a great option for the paleo diet, and a favorite with vegans.
Basic Bread Recipe for a Dutch Oven
1.5 C of warm water
1 lb Hemp Seed Flour
1 tsp Kosher Salt
1 pkg Dried Yeast
This basic recipe is perfect if you haven’t got a lot of time. Simply mix the ingredients together into a shaggy dough and leave them in a covered bowl for 5-7 hours. This can be done overnight, or in the morning, so that you can bake your bread in the evening for dinner. There is no need to knead the dough, just make sure that the ingredients are completely combined. When you return to the dough it will look like a bubbly sludge in the bowl. Tip it out onto a well floured surface and form and add in enough additional flour to form it into a round loaf. Cover and leave for a further 30 minutes. In the meantime, heat up a Dutch Oven in the oven at 440F. Once the oven is at the right temperature, tip in your dough into the Dutch Oven. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then take the lid off and bake for a further 20 minutes. When it is baked, the loaf will have beautiful crusty exterior and be airy in the middle. Tip the bread out and leave to cool, before spreading with a little fresh butter.
Twists on the basic Hemp Seed Loaf
In the initial stages of making the bread dough, throw in a good handful of seed or chopped nuts. This will give the loaf a wonderful flavor. Sesame and poppy seeds go well with hemp seeds. You can also make dinner rolls. Instead of forming a basic loaf, divide the dough into 12 equal, round balls and place on an oiled baking tray to prove for an hour. Then bake these at 400F in the oven for 20 minutes. They are delicious with stews or perfect for lunch.
Baking bread with hemp seed flour can be good for the whole family. You will have a delicious load and a home that smells of fresh, wonderful bread.
